PHYSICAL RECOVERY

When a hard drive is making a ticking or a scratching noise, the aperture arm in the hard drive may be failing. The failure of this arm can cause the read/write heads to touch the platters which can cause data loss.

Avoid attempting recovery yourself on traumatized drives as doing so may cause further damage or permanent data loss.

Physical damage could also be due to mishandling of the drive or circuit failure of the PCB board which is attached to the hard drive. Physical damage always causes at least some data loss, and in many cases due to physical damage the logical structures of the file system also may get damaged, all such damages constitute physical crashes of hard drive.
